What I Wish I Knew Before Moving Abroad

Accommodation is not simple

Finding a place to live is one of the hardest parts. Renting a full apartment alone is very expensive, so most students share. This is normal in Europe, and it helps you save money. Start looking early and avoid last-minute stress.

Documents take a long time

Your paperwork will move slowly. Acceptance letters, apostilles, visas and school documents all take time. Start eight to ten months before your planned date. It may feel early, but you will thank yourself later.

Cost of living is high

Groceries, transport, rent and basic items cost more than back home. Do not expect cheap living. Learn how to budget and track your spending. If groceries stress you out, Macadamia is one of the more affordable supermarkets that helped me a lot.

The weather hits different

People like to say Europe is not that cold, but trust me, if you grew up in Caribbean heat, the cold will surprise you. My body took a while to adjust. I even got nosebleeds. Get ready for climate shock and buy proper winter clothes when you arrive.

Transport is your best friend

You will walk a lot in Europe, and public transport is the main way to move around. Get a three month unlimited transport card as soon as possible. It is more cost effective and it saves you from buying multiple single tickets.

What You Should Pack

Clothes

Do not pack too much. You will end up buying clothes in Europe because the styles are different and stores have good quality items at reasonable prices. Pack basics only.

Electronics

Carry a power bank. If you forget, buy one as soon as you arrive. You will depend on your phone for maps, translations and travel, so keeping it charged is important.

Paperwork

Start early. You will need everything from birth certificates to school certificates to police records. Many of these documents need to be apostilled, so give yourself enough time.

Caribbean must haves

Bring your seasoning. Trust me, most Caribbean students miss the taste of home and supermarkets here do not always have what we use. A little Caribbean seasoning goes a long way.

Comfort items

Even if you do not have personal comfort items, you can pack something small to remind you of home. A keychain, a small flag or your favourite snack can help when you feel homesick.

Mistakes I Made That You Should Avoid

Overpacking

I packed things I never touched. I carried a whole pack of pins that is still sealed to this day. Pack light and buy what you need in Europe. You do not have to bring everything from home.

Not knowing the transport system

I got lost more than once because I did not learn the bus and metro routes early. Save yourself the stress and study your transport app from your first week.

Not planning my grocery budget

Food is expensive and I had to learn quickly which stores were cheaper. Go into the experience with a clear budget in mind.

How to Stay Confident When You Feel Alone

Studying in Europe can be overwhelming, especially when you are far from home. Confidence matters. Surround yourself with people who understand you. There are many students moving to Europe for the first time, and they are just as nervous as you. Connecting with people who share your experience will remind you that you are doing well and that you are not alone.

Confidence grows when you step out of your comfort zone and discover that you can handle more than you thought.

Your Journey Starts Now

Moving from the Caribbean to Europe is a big step, but it is a powerful one. You will grow, you will learn, and you will discover a new version of yourself. This starter pack is here to guide you, support you and help you feel prepared.
