The Day I Almost Gave Up On Studying Abroad and Why You Should Not

A story for Caribbean students who want to study overseas

If you are sitting at home wondering if someone from a small island can really study abroad, this is for you. I remember being in that same place, full of dreams after finishing high school in Trinidad and Tobago, but not having the money, the guidance or the connections.

Even though I was scared, Spain was on my heart. I could not explain it. I did not have a plan, I did not know anyone there, and I did not have everything figured out. I just felt that I was meant to go.

Before anything good happened, something very painful happened. That moment almost made me give up.

The Scam That Shook My Confidence

While I was preparing for my move to Spain, I reached out to someone I knew. They lived abroad and said they had a travel agency. Because I knew them in real life, I trusted them. They offered to book my ticket and told me I could send the money through Western Union.

I was excited and hopeful. I wanted everything to work out, so I sent the money. After that, things went wrong very quickly.

They told me they did not receive the money.
They stopped answering my calls.
They ignored my messages.
Then they disappeared.

The reality hit me all at once. I had been scammed by someone I trusted. Since they were in another country and the money was sent through Western Union, I could not get it back.

I lost a large amount of money.
I lost trust.
And for a moment, I lost myself.

I sat on my bed and thought, maybe studying abroad is not for people like me. Maybe my dream was too big.

What I Learned From That Moment

Even with the hurt and disappointment, something inside me refused to quit. I cried, I prayed, and I felt frustrated, but I did not stop.

Looking back, that experience taught me a lot.
I learned to do proper research.
I learned how to check if someone is trustworthy.
I learned to verify information before sending money.
And I learned how important it is to stand strong when life tests your dreams.

That scam did not end my journey. It prepared me for it.

How My Journey Really Started

After that, I began again. I looked for official resources. I learned what documents I needed. I applied for scholarships. I planned my budget. I found support where I could.

Step by step, everything came together.

I eventually made it to Spain. Not because everything went smoothly, but because I refused to give up. That journey became the reason I started Passport to Purpose. I want Caribbean students to have guidance and support so they do not feel lost the way I felt.

If You Remember One Thing, Remember This
