When I first dreamed of living and studying overseas, I thought purpose would come from a perfect plan. I believed that once I landed in a new country, everything would make sense. The truth is, purpose shows up in the moments that shake you, scare you and force you to grow.
If you are thinking about studying abroad or moving to a new country, I want you to understand something. Finding purpose is not about having everything figured out. It is about becoming the kind of person who keeps going, even when fear tries to hold you back.
I learned this during one of my first nights in Barcelona.
The Night I Learned to Trust Myself
I arrived in Spain filled with excitement. But the moment I stepped out into the city, I felt something else. I felt fear. I get lost very easily and my sense of direction is honestly terrible. Back home, I always had someone to pick me up or guide me. In Barcelona, it was just me, my suitcase and streets that all looked the same.
It was around ten in the night. My phone was on twenty percent. I had no idea where I was going. Each turn looked unfamiliar and every street felt bigger than me. I felt my heart racing. I kept asking myself, what if I get lost for real. What if I cannot find my way home. What if something bad happens.
I wanted to panic, but I kept walking.
I stopped for a moment, took a breath and looked around. I realised that nobody was coming to rescue me. I had to figure it out myself. I had to trust that I could handle this. I followed the signs, checked my maps carefully and paid attention to every landmark I passed. It was stressful, but I kept moving.
And eventually, I found my way back.
That night taught me a lesson that changed everything. I can be scared, but I can still handle things. I can feel lost and still get where I need to be. I can start over in a new country and learn as I go.
From that moment, I understood that purpose is not something you wait for. Purpose is something you grow into.
Fear Does Not Mean You Should Stop
If you feel nervous about moving abroad, starting school or leaving your comfort zone, hear me clearly. Fear is normal. Fear shows up when you are stepping into something new. It does not mean you are weak. It does not mean you are not ready. It simply means you are growing.
I never regretted choosing to travel. I met new people, my confidence grew and I discovered parts of myself that I would have never known if I stayed home. My world expanded in ways I could not imagine.
So if you are scared, go anyway. Every time you are afraid, that is usually the moment that leads to your next level.
Three Things to Remember When You Feel Stuck
1. This feeling is happening because you have never done it before
When something is new, your body reacts with fear. It is natural. Do not let this stop you.
2. Even if you are scared, still take the step
You will not regret trying. Most of the things we fear are not as big as we imagine. Once you start, confidence grows.
3. The moment that scares you the most is usually the moment you need to act
Fear appears when you are close to something important. Move anyway. Push through it. You will thank yourself later.
Your Purpose Is Waiting
Finding purpose abroad is not a straight path. It is a journey filled with new cultures, new people, new challenges and new lessons. Every uncomfortable moment is building you. Every mistake helps you grow. Every step forward shapes you into the person you are meant to become.
Do not let fear decide your future. You deserve to see the world. You deserve to grow. You deserve to discover who you are outside the borders of your island.
Purpose is not far from you. It is already inside you, waiting for the right moment to rise.
When you choose to move, to trust yourself and to keep going, that is when your purpose begins to shine.
